Paul and Chimchar Ep. 40
So, I noticed the latest caps from episode 40 are up at Filb.de and I decided to start making some icons from the episode. While going through the caps I noticed a few things that could possibly change the look of Paul's Pokemon team in future episodes. Most notably these observations revolve around Paul's starter Pokemon Chimchar.

As we know, the group runs into Cynthia, the league champion, and Paul shows up out of the blue again. It's been twenty-four episodes since Paul's last appearance and it looks as though he's up to his old tricks again. Instantly, he challenges Cynthia to a battle because he thinks he can defeat her with his Pokemon team. Cynthia sends out her Garchomp, which we saw going up against a Bronzong earlier, while Paul starts off with his starter Pokemon Chimchar. It doesn't take long for Chimchar to lose the match. Paul then shows that he now has three new Pokemon Murkrow, Weavile, and a Torterra. It appears somewhere along the way his strongest Pokemon, Eleckid, was either tossed aside or given away in disgust for losing a match. Paul gives Chimchar the same speech he gives every Pokemon in his possession that loses against another Pokemon a sure sign that its time with him is limited. Weavile, Murkrow, and Torterra all lose but Paul does not look at them in disgust at all another sign that how he treats Chimchar has changed.

At a nearby Pokemon Center, Paul ignores his Pokemon and their injuries leaving their care to Cynthia who takes it upon herself to treat the injuries that Torterra and Chimchar have. Chimchar takes very well to Cynthia's kindness proving that Paul hasn't been very kind to the little flame monkey lately. Ash and Paul have a few words over Chimchar's treatment and the usual how Paul treats Pokemon in general. Cynthia then takes the boys out to the ruins she had been looking at when Paul showed up. While that is happening, Team Rocket shows up and swipes Chimchar. Once Paul finds out what happens, Chimchar has woken up in James' arms and charred Team Rocket but good. Paul fights back with yet another new Pokemon, Ursaring, who proves to be pretty powerful. Team Rocket gets blasted off for the umpteenth time and when Chimchar hits the ground he gets another good talking to from Paul. However, as Dawn and Ash give Paul their two cents on the situation Cynthia once again gives Chimchar the positive attention he's been lacking during his time with Paul. Cynthia then leaves Paul with a few words of wisdom on Pokemon treatment and possibly the Dialga and Pialka images carved into the stone at the ruins. By the end of the episode Paul, Murkrow, Weavile, and Torterra watch with anger as the others head off to their next destination. However, Chimchar has a smile upon his face from the obvious kind treatment he recieved from Cynthia. Is this a sign that Paul is going to give up Chimchar?

Signs certainly point that way from the treatment he gave the fire monkey compared to Cynthia's treatment of Chimchar in the episode. For one thing Paul hasn't allowed Chimchar to evolve and yet one of his new Pokemon is already an evolved form of a starter, Turtwig. Paul has already gotten rid of Eleckid a Pokemon that was considered to be his strongest Pokemon. Chimchar is the only original Pokemon Paul has left and it looks as though Paul is beginning to tire of the little monkey. The question now becomes will Chimchar be given away, left on the side of the road in disgust, or will he run off to find Cynthia?

Uhh, how do you know he has given up, correction, Elekid? Elekid was very tough in his team and besides, in ep 40 he only showed 5 of his Pokemon.

And in my opinion I think he'll keep Chimchar. Even if Team Rocket stole Chimchar Paul could've proven he didn't want it by not running after Team Rocket. True, he could abandon it, but he hasn't yet after all this time.

btw chimchar isn't paul's starter and i dunno if i were to say paul and his team were angry at the window because there's no reason to be angry lawl. they all originally have some kind of evil look to begin with

But he is one of the three starters in the region and the Pokemon out of the current crop Paul has that has been with him the longest.

Does it matter? Torterra is just an evo of a starter. He stored the Pokemon and decided to go to Sinnoh with just Elekid and Chimchar like Ash did with Pikachu and Aipom. He did say he traveled to Kanto, Johto, and Hoenn. I believe he also said that Turtwig was his first Pokemon

(Ooops my mistake)

Because when he battles he uses Elekid a lot to win. He did so against Ash and Roark. If he had Elekid he would have pulled him out at any point in the battle or in the ensuing issue with Team Rocket but he didn't he had the Ursaring instead. There was neither hide nor hair of the Pokemon in the entire episode. I know there's been entire episodes where Dawn and Brock have gone without whipping out a pokeball but this was so unlike Paul. I haven't seen him not use Elekid ever. Then again he's never had five Pokemon before and we all know how he tires of Pokemon and gives them up by letting them go or giving them to some random kid. The major sign that I think Chimchar is going to end up not being with Paul is the way he reacted to Cynthia and the look on his face at the end of the episode. He was happy while Paul and the others looked angry that they lost to Cynthia.

Oh and Paul wasn't even going to go to the Pokemon Center until Cynthia said something to him about it. He was all ready to walk away from the battle with his hurt Pokemon but Cynthia convinced him to stop at the Pokemon Center.

But he didn't use Elekid while fighting Cynthia nor used Ursaring in the battle. He doesn't have to use Elekid, which he didn't, but I don't think he'd let him go. He hasn't used Ursaring in an ep before after capturing it, but that didn't mean he released it. He just chose to use Ursaring in that situation.

I think he was fighting Cynthia to try out some strategies; he didn't really think about winning.

Plus how do you know he never had 5 Pokemon? He's not a beginning trainer -_-

Also, again, you don't know if they're angry at that part. His Pokemon all had weird expressions to begin with. They looked blah to me. Why would they be angry at Cynthia? She helped recovered them.
